There is work available in sheetrock repair in Dallas homes and offices. Often it is a hole in the wall, or a leaking hvac unit that has damaged the drywall in the ceiling and run down the wall.
Repairing drywall is a pretty easy open source job, and can be done with minimal tools and some basic carpentry skills like the ability to measure and draw a straight line.
The difficult thing is making your repaired drywall look like the rest of the wall. Matching texture is something that takes skill and time to do well.
There are 3 common problems that make for a sloppy repair.
1. The drywall repair is bulging out.
This occurs in two ways. First, the sheetrock was not installed flush to the existing wall. And second, the tape and bed job was sloppy and created a raised edge even though the sheetrock was flush. The second is the more common reason, and can be avoided by scraping the existing texture down, and thinning the amount compound used to tape and bed the joint.
2. Drywall is sunk in.
This happens when the wallboard used in the repair is not as thick as the wallboard used in the wall. Luckily this is the easiest to repair, just float out the sunken area with extra joint compound.
3. The texture just doesn’t match.
This is the most common problem. Even if you have taken the proper steps to ensure that you have a level smooth surface, you can still totally screw up the patch job with a poorly matched texture.
So here a few texturing techniques that may help you get that good match.
Float it out.
Floating out the damaged area before texturing… see the picture. Alex has floated out the sunken area(the large white stripe) then textured with a light knock down.
Soften the texture.
Because new texture has sharper edges that wall texture that has been painted over many times, you can use a wet rag or sponge to soften the lines. Let the new texture dry and then lightly wipe the area to smooth out the edges.
Clean the edges.
Clean the area around your repair. If you have used a blow on texture like orange peel or knockdown you will want to wipe down the area around the repair. If you don’t the lighter areas that did not receive a full texture will appear “sandy”
Prime and Paint
Be sure to prime the new texture, and the best practice is to repaint the entire wall to ensure that there is not a difference in color or sheen in the repaired area.
